Whitefish populations are collapsing, largely due to invasive zebra and quagga mussels. The mussels came to the Great Lakes on European Freighters in the 1980s. Today, they blanket the lakebeds, depriving baby whitefish of the food they need to survive.
The collapse of whitefish has been devastating to local fishing families, many of whom have been operating for generations.
