Before and After: High water levels at Michigan lighthouse

Before and After: High water levels at Michigan lighthouse
February 21, 2020 Ric Mixter

The view of Lake Michigan by Big Sable Point Lighthouse near Ludington is visibly different in 2017 and 2020, a good indicator of the drastic changes in water level the lake is currently facing.

Drone pilot Dusty Klifman visited the lighthouse on New Year’s Day in 2019 and 2020, taking bird’s-eye-view pictures of how the waters have encroached on the historic structure.

The Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association reports they have had water in the basement of the keeper’s quarters, but it was easily controlled with a sump pump and no further issues have been reported.
