On June 6, 2026, a team of filmmakers and scientists explored the deepest area of the Great Lakes for the first time in 40 years.
Superior Maximus is more than 1,300 feet beneath the surface of Lake Superior. While scientists have studied its inhabitants indirectly with gill nets, it’s only been directly observed a handful of times.
In 2026, filmmakers and explorers Zach Melnick and Yvonne Drebert deployed a high-tech underwater drone to explore this deep zone.
