Ever wonder what the Earth looked like billions of years ago? Lake Huron can take you there.

The Middle Island Sinkhole was created by groundwater eroding away the limestone lakebed. The groundwater is high in sulfur and low in oxygen, creating conditions that scientists believe resembles the planet’s oceans more than 2 billion years ago.

The sinkhole is home to vibrant microbial mats believed to resemble some of the first life to emerge on the planet.

In September of 2026 we teamed up with @InspiredPlanet-x6r to send an underwater drone into the sinkhole and livestream what we found. Check out the full exploration on our YouTube channel!
