You probably know about the Edmund Fitzgerald, but who was the ship named after? Who was Edmund Fitzgerald?
Edmund Fitzgerald was the President and Chairman of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, which owned the vessel. He was so reluctant to lend his name to the ship that he abstained from the vote that bestowed it.
Despite this, the ship was a source of pride for Fitzgerald. He was even gifted a scale model of the vessel, which he kept in his office.
When the ship sank on November 10th, 1975, Fitzgerald was reportedly distraught.
Today, the name remains synonymous with maritime tragedy in the Great Lakes.
